“A little bigger than expected, but otherwise perfect” 2010-06-05
By Richard G. Battle
This case turned out to be a little bit bigger than I expected, but it still fit in the space I had allotted for it, so no worries. Other than that, putting the front face back on after installing the components was a bit of a challenge, but I think I was just having a slow moment (note: I didn’t read directions until after I had finished getting it together. If I had, it would have clearly pointed out what I should have been doing). I ended up putting a piece of electrical tape over the LED on the front because it was so bright, but that’s been true with every case I’ve bought in the past decade. I bought this to run a light duty web server and quasselcore. It does both perfectly. I had no trouble installing sidux [...]so no complaints.

“Great Little Computer for Runnig Ubuntu Server” 2010-03-23
By Dale Konle (Concord, WI USA)
I came across this little computer when looking for a web server for a church of a little under a 1000 members. Having a dedicated server rather then renting hosting allows for a much richer set of capabilities. Since this setup only draws about 30 watts it is cheaper too.

This is the setup.

*2 gig ram

*2 – 500 gig green hard drives (the second drive is installed with an adapter kit in the DVD drive bay.)

*Ubuntu server hosting Durpal

Daily backups are automatic using Rdiff-backup backing up everyday to the second hard drive. Rdiff just backs up changes while compressing and saving the previous changes. This allows daily changes to the web page to be saved for years with out having to delete any.

After installing the operating system and setting up the network everything else can be done remotely. This leaves the Wind connected to just power and an Ethernet cable so it can be put in a closet or basement. The bios is set to reboot automatically after a power failure which it has done without problems. It runs cool and quite when set in the provided cradle with the cooling vents down.

“Great Netbook once you get around the OEM’s problems” 2010-08-03
By John S. Elder (WOODLAND HILLS, CA, US)
This netbook feels fantastic. Its thin and light, has a sold high-end build quality, and works simply as advertised. I recommend installing the netbook version of Ubuntu on here since Windows 7 Starter is a little slow on these basic netbook components. This is a typical netbook with a high class feel.

However, the OEM loaded BIOS is outdated and if you let your battery drain to complete 0% it wont recharge. Once you get this laptop first thing you need to do is to flash the BIOS to the newest version that fixes this bug. I did it on my own, some easy instructions online to do so. After doing this, I am very happy with this product. It works decently for what I need it for (College), and it looks better than the typical cheep plastic netbooks that are out there.

“might be good but not for me” 2010-07-04
By Proaction (Midwest)
I returned this computer before even a week passed because it disappointed in matching my monitor.

I previously have owned an HP netbook so I have experience with the concept.

Pros: This is a very attractive, light netbook, and I loved the chicklet keyboard. Why don’t more manufacturers adopt this as a standard? I was looking forward to the 15 hour battery life but never got a chance to test it. The on board screen resolution was nice, although I am partial to the “non-glare” concept for a traveling computer.

Amazon Prime is great and worth the annual price if you are a regular, and the return went smoothly.

Cons: Windows 7 Starter might be okay if you’ve never had any other computer experience and wouldn’t immediately miss many features and the adjustability of any other previous OS. It seems to me to be a trick invented by Microsoft to give you the illusion that you are buying a low-priced item because once you get it you are going to have to spend $60 to $150 more to get an OS you can really use!

But the deal-breaker on this netbook was immediately apparent when it could not reach the correct resolution for my 1600×1200 monitor (which is only a moderate size, not huge). Yes, it is possible that this is the fault of Win7 Starter, but I could find no supporting literature to answer my question and so I would have had to gamble to pay for the OS upgrade, which would not have been returnable! The whole point of a netbook for me is the benefit of light and small outside my house, but being able to utilize a decent monitor once I bring it back inside the house!

Another Con: The battery design is interesting and keeps the bottom off the table surface by protruding below the bottom surface if you want it to run cooler, I suppose. But when using it on your lap it is quite uncomfortable and was digging into my legs. I would have had to ADD some object with a flat surface to use it in that manner which would have meant one more thing I would have had to carry around with me. NO thanks.

“AWFUL!” 2010-08-18
By Anonymous Person
So I didn’t buy this laptop from Amazon, but I WAS given a new one by a friend.

It is one of the worst laptops I have EVER seen!

Within a few weeks, the mouse began to stop moving and not work. The hinge that holds the screen to the motherboard also breaks EXTREMELY easy. As time progressed (I’ve had it for about a year now), the battery power went from being able to last 8 hours, to dying after 5-6hrs. I would say that these problems are understandable if the laptop was $100 new, but almost $500?! That’s a ridiculous price for a laptop with so many problems! I highly suggest not getting this laptop. It is horrible quality.

“Bad buy!” 2010-08-14
By Taq (USA)
I bought Dell Inspiron mini 10 netbook last year. Within 6 mths, motherboard started giving problems, power adapter stopped working and screen started flickering. Luckily it was still within the initial warranty.

Initially, I was very excited about buying mini because of it’s weight and portability. It cost me around $350. Now I think iPhone beats it for its portability and weight if I am going to use it only for internet access. For other uses nothing like normal laptop or a desktop. Never use netbook as your primary computer.

Dell is very shady about prices of their warranty extension. They quoted me a warranty price that was almost equivalent to the price of netbook itself. They do not have fixed warranty prices on their website, but they give ridiculously high priced quotes when you call their support center. I was asking for an extension on the existing warranty and they were tricking me with ridiculous price for upgrade, without informing me. Luckily I spotted it. Never take them at a face value. Possibly this is the reason they can afford to offer mini at such a cheap rate.

When you cannot trust a company, how can you trust their product?

“I’m in Love!!!” 2010-05-30
By J. Boswell (El Centro, CA)
I bought this after discarding an MSI Wind netbook running Vista. It’s superior in every way. The build quality is better, which is particularly noticeable at the keyboard. Overall, I like the size, the weight, and just the feel of it. I paid $299, which is a steal, for a box running XP (had it with Microsoft’s new operating systems!) You know when you buy something and it just fits you perfectly? That’s how this feels. Love it!

“Great value” 2010-02-20
By Vinny Tumi (Pacific Grove, CA)
High points are portability and a battery life of about 5 hours max on medium brightness. That is what I expected. The only way you will get 6+ hours is on the dimmest setting. This is true for any netbook. Yes, loaded with unwanted software, but that can be deleted. Run speed is fine as expected for an atom/1 gig. I would pay $279- $299 direct from Amazon. In that price range it is a 5 star.

“Sweet LITTLE computer!” 2009-03-25
By Plano Gal (Plano, Texas)
This is a great computer to take to a hotel…. It is not meant for solid home use; the keyboard is too small, and the memory isn’t great.

You can actually use the keyboard, but I do find myself pecking with one finger a lot, which is why I didn’t give it a five star. The speed is pretty fair, and the wireless connection is awesome. I can get a signal in a room that I could not get on my wireless laptop, which makes it a nice little computer to use in my bedroom if my husband is on our main computer. I previously had no way of connecting to the internet in that room, but thanks to this computer and our wireless system, I can.

It was easy to set up (almost no set up required), easy to figure out, for this novice, and easy to connect to the internet. The Linux, which the salesman warned me about, and my teenager told me I would hate, was not an issue at all. It doesn’t take any prevous knowledge of how to use linux. It was easy to connect to the internet at the hotel and at home.

It serves my purpose perfectly (throw in a back pack to take on vacation to connect to the internet). I haven’t really done anything with documents. It doesn’t have a lot of memory or a place to put a dvd…, but you can use a card… for memory and add an external disk drive. I wouldn’t want to type a whole lot on it. It is best for net surfing, checking e-mail…, but like I said, you can use the keyboard. It just takes a little more effort than a full size.

I bought a little mouse to go with it, and it is handy dandy! I also like the little neoprene or whatever it is called cover (quite awesome). It is great protection for it. I put the mouse and cord in a little make up bag and throw in my back pack with it.

“Piece of junk horrible customer service” 2010-05-16
By D. Hartman (Il)
Piece of junk. Don’t waste your money. 3 mths out of warranty and they won’t repair. Screen freezes bars all over the place that are colored, have to do hard shut down 8 times a day. 2 USB ports quit working, battery lasted 2 mths past warranty of 6 mths, audio is horrible. Paid almost 400 dollars for this. contacted Better Business Bureau as Asus customer service is a bunch of idiots and talk to people that you can’t even understand. DO NOT BUY

“Love , Hate Relationship” 2010-08-06
By Don
Like I said in the title this is a love hate relationship. I decide to buy this in December 2009. I received it about two weeks before X-mas. Everything worked great the first two weeks, then the hate part woke up. The day after X-mas it crashed. I had made a restore copy on the hard drive as it suggested. When I try to use it, it wouldn’t do anything. Because I was in Iowa and not in SC, I had to wait until the first of the year to try to fix it.

Upon returning to SC, I put in the restore CD and it didn’t see it. I tried several times and it just would not see the restore CD. So I decided to try my live linux CD and when I placed it in the CD it started to load. After loading my linux OS, I was able to see that windows was still there. So after several more attempts, I gave up and install linux on it. I have run Lint Mint for the last 7 months with no problems. I have been able to install windows (1st. August) on it again. I still use Lint Mint more but I have been able to install PhotoShop CS2 (which I needed) on the window side. It works very well without any problems.

I really love this netbook. It takes getting used to. The keyboard is just great. Once you adjust to the screen size you will have no problems with it. It’s size is a plus. The only other problem, that I have with it, is that the mouse pad must be turned off when using a mouse or it will cause problems.

“I Just Love It!” 2010-03-25
By Laercio Silva Jr. (Brazil)
I had a HP netbook before, and the Samsung is better on so many ways.

The material and color is very nice, the Screen is LED, very good light, colors and contrast.

I did change the software and uninstall most of useless pre-loaded programs and my samsung run very fast and smooth, if you have problem with the speed, change the McAfee Anti-Virus for the Avast Home Edition is free.

Plus I did install the OpenOffice.Org is just perfect for that machine.

“Still going after 7+ years….” 2010-07-23
By hot4hypatia (29.48 N , 98.51 W)
Purchased directly from Dell in Spring, 2004. Still working although I just replaced the OEM power cord with a cheap one from Amazon. Now it charges great and cosmetically it still looks and runs like new.

Some people have had issues with the OEM power cord. Mine worked fine for about 4 yrs. but it became very inefficient and the ‘brick’ started getting way to hot, but all is good now that I replaced the original adapter.

While the 700m is not as slick as my newer Apple MBP, Win XP Pro is still running fine and all my cool PC games are loaded on it so I hope it lasts 7 more years!

A very lightweight notebook(even lighter than my old Sony VAIO) so it is easy to travel with.

I own 2 batteries – the original and a 3rd party battery with longer capacity. The newer battery lasts about 4 hrs unless I watch DVDs and play games continuously. That runs it down in about 2 hrs.

“You’re not going to find a better WinXP notebook!” 2010-02-17
By K. Bolinsky (Mississippi)
This notebook was really Dell’s flagship “small and light” model when it debuted several years ago. It offered all the available bells and whistles, including a true widescreen, SD card slot, S-Video output, two USB ports, and a PCMCIA card slot. The silver and white color scheme was a first for Dell — the notebook still attracts attention!

“Dell sucks” 2010-08-20
By Joseph Erik Servin (alameda)
Like all Dell stuff it lasts long enough for the warranty to expire then it dies within a few months after. Stopped charging and just died. Time to take it apart and maybe replace the dc-in board? Cheap chinese crap.

“It was great unti lthe hard drive got fried…” 2010-03-19
By HAWKEYE (Chicago – USA)
I LOVED my Dell Mini and I used it every day until that dreaded error message. I took very good care of my mini and then the warranty expired a week before my Dell 910 stopped working at the airport. DELL support would not help me because my warranty expired even though I bought the extended warranty through QVC. I am going to throw it away because for the price of a new hard drive and power cord I can by a new netbook with impressive battery life. I paid a ridiculous amount of money for this when it came out $500+ and now they are considerably cheaper. I would never buy another DELL. Good luck to you if you decide to get one – maybe you will have better luck than I did.
